Why Your CDE Upload Keeps Getting Rejected (And How to Fix It)

You've spent hours preparing a document package. You go to upload to Aconex, or BIM 360, or whatever CDE the main contractor is using — and half your files get rejected. No useful error message. Just red flags next to a list of filenames.

This article explains exactly why it happens and how to stop it happening again.

The Common Data Environment doesn't look inside your PDF. The first thing it checks is the filename. If your filename doesn't match the expected ISO 19650 structure exactly, the upload fails.

Lowercase letters

❌  prj-acme-zz-01-dr-a-0001.pdf
✅  PRJ-ACME-ZZ-01-DR-A-0001.pdf

Wrong number of fields

❌  PRJ-ACME-ZZ-01-DR-0001.pdf
❌  PRJ-ACME-ZZ-01-DR-A-REV-0001.pdf
✅  PRJ-ACME-ZZ-01-DR-A-0001.pdf

Number field not zero-padded

42 will fail. It needs to be 0042.

Spaces in the filename

❌  PRJ ACME ZZ 01 DR A 0001.pdf
✅  PRJ-ACME-ZZ-01-DR-A-0001.pdf

Option 1: Check manually against the BEP. Works for small batches.

Option 2: Use ISOCheck. Paste a list, import a CSV, or drop your files in. It tells you exactly which field failed and why. 200 files in about 30 seconds.

1. Export the rejection report from the CDE if available
2. Run your filenames through a validator to find all issues at once
3. Fix and re-export
4. Re-upload the corrected batch
